The Golden Globes 2014: Tame Style, Wild Stars

Did you catch the Golden Globes Sunday night? I admittedly watched them on DVR last night, while I researched all of the lovely ladies' looks and cuddled with Carter. This sums up my night:

He's giving me the stink eye because he only has one third of my attention. #hesspoiled

The awards show continued to be entertaining, thanks to its gorgeous gowns, snarky hosts and tipsy guests. The red carpet looks celebrated individuality over trends, according to many news outlets. But, besides a few style standouts, I thought they were mostly tame. Below are more of my thoughts on this year's Golden Globes style. However, the presenters and award winners were far from boring! My beloved Sandra Bullock looked beautiful, but I unfortunately didn't love her dress. It would have been much improved if it was one color. This got me thinking, I would love to dress Sandy! I would put her in something strong and sassy.

Are Tina Fey and Amy Poehler aging backward?  They seem to get better and better!  Amy’s black Stella McCartney dress from the red carpet was sexy and chic.  I see we’re still doing the smooth belts from McCartney’s collection but instead of gold they are black leather.  I’m still in lust with them.

I’m glad Tina Fey changed out of that floral print and let her hair down for the show.  Her bedazzled burgundy body con dress was gorgeous.

I think Jennifer Lawrence looked beautiful with an edgier dark lip and silver eye makeup that enhanced her blue eyes.  Her style and choice in dresses is usually impeccable, but her white Dior Haute Couture gown didn’t do anything for me.  I look forward to seeing what she wears to the Oscars.

My best dressed? 
Margot Robbie in Gucci: She is just gorgeous.  Her plunging white gown with a high slit is oh, so sexy.  The crystals and emeralds play up the sparkle in her eye.

Elisabeth Moss in J. Mendel: I’m a sucker for glitzy art deco prints and I love this hemline that shows off her shoes.

Lupita Nyong’o: I gasped.  Beautiful.  It reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s Oscar gown, but the color (and matching lip) is exquisite on her.  Probably my most favorite look of the night.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive: Being so statuesque, Cate Blanchett can pull off intricate and unusual designs with such elegance.  I like that this sheer lace dress has a unique pattern and neckline.  Plus, her hair is super chic.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli: This bold black and white print is striking!  I love the mix of geometric lines and organic scrolls.  Her swept back hair, red lip and rectangular earrings coordinate perfectly.

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy: The feather-like texture on her Givenchy gown is so cool.  Her look has a slightly rock royalty feel.

Kate Beckinsale in Gucci: Another glitzy geometric pattern, plus a sweetheart neckline and curve-hugging silhouette?  Yes, please.  She looks exquisite.

Naomi Watts in Tom Ford:  Yes, metallic column gowns have been done before, but Naomi Watts pulls it off flawlessly.  The color palette is very flattering on the blonde and the chunky necklace and cutouts add a slight twist to the tried and true shimmer.

Olivia Wilde in Gucci: The long-sleeved sequin gown has also been done again and again, but Olivia Wilde, with her baby bump, looks radiant.  Her loose curls and smoky eyeliner makes it young and fresh and I love the emerald.

Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen: This dress fits her perfectly!  It’s simple, elegant and sexy.  The blue floral statement necklace adds whimsy to the look and sets it apart from other black ball gowns.

From My Guy’s Perspective: Emmys 2013 Best Dressed

I’m sure by now everyone is so over the Emmys fashion.  But I’ve been a little preoccupied and didn’t get the chance to share my reaction to the evening’s stars – the gowns!  Or rather my guy’s perspective!  Better late than never?   So here goes, just a little late.

For the Oscar awards earlier this year I presented a top 5 best dressed list… from my guy’s perspective.  Since it proved to be a hit, Carlton and I collaborated again to bring you this Emmys post, in our typical style, fashionably late.  (I didn’t get this name for nothin’!)

I was pleasantly surprised with Carlton's choices.  He mostly chose romantic styles but surprised me with Lena Heady's fashion forward lace dress.  While I agree that Carlton's choices are gorgeous, Heady and Kerry Washington's dresses are some of my favorites, here are five of my own.

The Find: Metal Skinny Belt

I found it!  I found a VERY inexpensive version of the metal skinny belt that I drooled over on several waists on the red carpet, especially Jennifer Larence in Christian Dior and Gwyneth Paltrow in Stella McCartney.  At the time of my post about The Belt of the Season, I could only find metal wide belts sorta within my budget.  But thanks to GoJane.com I now have a skinny one for $8!  Actually two.  Yippee!  Oh, it's the little things... or very cute little things. 

So anyway, I ordered the metal plate skinny belt from GoJane.com in gold and black and in gold and lilac.  (Now it's only available in lilac.)  I plan on wearing it as soon as the weather warms up with just about any of my dresses, but particularly this new mint skater dress from Akira in Chicago.  I already paired it with an orange-red peplum top and black skinny pants for a birthday party.  And now I'm itching for the neon belts...  For more ideas on how to rock it, see Full Metal Belt: Born to Shine.

Full Metal Belt: Born to Shine

You’ve seen it. Its shine caught your eye. And if you’re like me, you can’t get it out of your mind. It’s the sleekest, chicest accessory to hit the red carpet.

It’s The Belt of the Season, made of solid, smooth metal.

Before the metal belt made such an impact at award shows and A-list parties, it appeared in early 2012 on the runway for the fall Calvin Klein Collection and in the lookbook for Stella McCartney’s fall evening line.  We saw McCartney’s gold version several times last year from her favorite “Saskia” gown. The “Most Worn Dress of 2012” was sported by Gwyneth Paltrow, Shalom Harlow, Brooklyn Decker and Kira Miro, to name a few.

Raf Simons also used it to nip waists and add modern edge to his debut for Christian Dior Haute Couture. His fall 2012 collection reimagined the groundbreaking premiere of Dior’s “New Look” from 1947.

Later that year it topped more looks from geometric print dresses at the Juanjo Oliva show to Prabal Gurung’s black and white ensembles.

A metal belt used to evoke childhood memories of my brother practicing to be a WWE professional wrestler in our living room.  Luckily I survived those matches intact and I can appreciate today’s metal belts, which seem equally futuristic and rock & roll.  The accessory’s allure is that it adds that little something extra to make almost any dress more edgy, yet polished. 

How to Rock It:

(Almost) Any Dress - Seriously. A metal belt will give some sass to a romantic dress with lace or ruffles and put a simple, sexy dress over the edge.  Consider adding a jacket or long cardigan over or under the belt.

A Skirt and Top Combo - See above.  Plus it will accentuate the waist even more.  I think a metal belt would look very bad ass with a leather pencil skirt and a simple top.  For a tamer outfit, pair it with a flowy midi skirt.

Skinny Jeans - Pair it with dark skinny jeans, a boxy cropped top and booties for a rocker look; a tunic sweater and flats for a casual day or a sexy tank top for a party look.

Additional Note: Keep jewelry minimal or even better, wear none at all.  If you must, try multistring mixed media pieces, a metal cuff bracelet or stud earrings.

Style Standouts at the 2013 SAG Awards

Yes, it's award season in the film and television industries. From the Critics’ Choice Awards to the Academy Awards, this time of year presents several opportunities to drool over Dior gowns, giant jewels and the women flaunting them. While the Screen Actors Guild Awards are praised for its simplicity and sincerity, the 2013 show was not short on style! To my delight, there were too many style standouts at the SAG Awards to ignore! Several women dressed like royalty in blue, but did you see all the bombshells in black?

 

Below are a few of my favorite appearances and notable trends from Sunday’s show.

 

 



The Golden Globes 2013: I laughed, I cried, I actually saw more than The Dresses!

Here are a few of my favorite things from the 2013 Golden Globe Awards, from the fashion, jewels and beauty to the moments that left an impression!

“I beat Meryl!” quipped Jennifer Lawrence when she won the globe!  The reference to First Wives Club (and guts to jest with Mrs. Streep) makes it official.  She's more than an "It Girl."  She's here to stay.

Lawrence was gorgeous in a red-coral Dior Haute Couture gown.  I love the color!  The smooth metallic belt and box clutch adds a bit of edge.  These belts have appeared on several red carpets now and I can't wait to get my waist in one!

Julianne Moore looked the opposite of the character she played in Game Change – chic and overjoyed for her nomination.  She wore a Tom Ford dress and diamond chandelier earrings.

Catherine Zeta Jones presented a clip from Les Miserables wearing an ivory Jenny Packham gown with sheer sleeves, shimmery embellishments and a romantic silhouette.  The style is somewhat reminiscent of the twenties, my favorite era, and this is one of my favorite dresses of the evening.

Emily Blunt was simply statuesque.  She wore a gold Michael Kors dress with cutouts and and Lorraine Schwartz jewels.  Her form and face – just beautiful.

Classic, yet trendy describes Rachel Weisz's Louis Vuitton dress with sheer panels covered in polka dots.  I think she looked so pretty and her hair and makeup gave her a little extra vavoom!

Kate Hudson wore a black Alexander McQueen keyhole gown with gold trim around the neck and on the belt.  It's sexy, but understated and unique.  Black and gold is such a popular combination right now and it's oh so chic.

Ben Affleck’s leading lady also shone in red.  Jennifer Garner wore a sequined Vivienne Westwood Couture gown in a rich red.  I like how the sequins were sewn in a pattern to give the dress some texture.  Her tousled curls were swept back in a blasé way to reveal yellow gold and diamond earrings by David Webb.

Before Garner presented, she was sweet enough to thank a couple people her husband forgot. Ben’s a lucky man – two golden trophies to match his (not just a) trophy wife.

Isla Fisher was stunning in a pale Reem Acra gown with a sheer neckline and shiny embellishments.  I loved the color of her hair with the hue of the dress and her berry lip.

Apparently I have a thing for red heads.  While I'm not crazy about the extra fabric on the top, I still think Jessica Chastain looks amazing in this Calvin Klein Collection dress.  Maybe it's the electric color with her ginger hair.

Mirand Kerr lived up to her title as a Victoria Secret model in this bombshell of a dress.  Her red Zuhair Murad gown featured a deep V neck and high slit.  Her statement earrings, lingerie runway-ready hair, red lips and arm candy, husband Orlando Bloom, complete her sexy ensemble.

Jennifer Lopez looked absolutely ravishing in a nude Zuhair Murad gown that made her appear as if she was wearing nothing but delicate white lace.  The gown blended perfectly with her skin.  Her curls were swept to the side in an Old Hollywood sort of way, which proved to be a popular style that evening.

I think Lea Michele's dress suited her perfectly.  The shimmery white Elie Saab featuring her signature thigh high slit was young and fun and fit for a stage.  But I'd love to see her try something a bit more edgy.

Anne Hathaway wore a simply elegant Chanel gown.  She glowed in the white, sparkly creation, but it left me wanting more.

UPDATE:

Found some new dresses that I adore...

Since JT couldn't, Vanessa Hudgens brought sexy back in a shiny Jenny Packham dress at the Warner Bros. and InStyle Golden Globe Awards After Party.  She looks party-ready with sultry eye makeup, large yellow gold earrings, a plunging neckline and large sequins.  Note: More yellow gold and black!  It's a little rock and roll and a lot of glam - love it!

Also at the party, Julianne Hough wore another Jenny Packham creation.  (Jenny Packham is a popular lady!)  The blush pink gown was given some edge with structured shoulders, a deep V neckline and shiny side panels.  I like the silhouette the lines create, her matching pink lip and her hair in a retro wave.

Ashley Tisdale nailed it in this Issa dress at the same party.  The nude dress is so simple and sleek and the slim fit and cutouts keep it sassy.  She paired it with a cuff by Sylva & Cie, earrings by State Room and a clubch by L. K. Bennett.
